ABOUT avery

Avery is a gentle soul in search of a peaceful place to land. She is deeply sensitive to energy and naturally drawn to calm, compassionate people—something that makes perfect sense when you understand her world. Avery is both blind and deaf, relying on touch and scent to feel safe and connected. Busy, noisy environments can be overwhelming for her, but when she finds someone whose presence feels steady and kind, Avery blossoms. She becomes playful, goofy, cuddly, and full of warmth, delighting everyone lucky enough to earn her trust. She is a staff favourite, known for her sweet snuggles and unwavering love of treats.

Avery is looking for a palliative or hospice-style home—one focused on comfort, routine, and emotional safety. She would do best in a quiet, adult or teen home without stairs, where her physical needs can be gently supported and her days can be unhurried and predictable. While Avery may not see or hear you, she will feel you—and she will love you deeply.

Avery is living with several significant medical conditions. She has a genetic condition called retinal degeneration, which caused her blindness, and she also has hip dysplasia and arthritis in her right front elbow due to a previous fracture. In addition, Avery has been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and is currently in liver failure. She is receiving ongoing veterinary care and has recently been started on blood pressure medication to help support her comfort and overall quality of life. Despite these challenges, Avery continues to enjoy gentle walks, cozy naps, and meaningful moments of connection with her people.

Because of her visual and hearing impairments, Avery can be reactive and may lunge when meeting new people or dogs, particularly if startled. Slow, thoughtful introductions are essential to help her feel safe. She is also reactive toward other dogs and at this point it would be an easier transition for her to go to a home without any other dogs.

Avery was surrendered when her previous family moved to a home with stairs that were no longer safe for her. She is now searching for a compassionate family willing to open their heart to a dog whose time may be limited, but whose capacity for love is profound.

Dog Tales will support Avery’s adopter with training guidance and ongoing support to help ensure her transition is as smooth and comforting as possible. Avery’s ideal family will commit to visiting regularly to build trust and connection before adoption.

This is not an easy adoption—but it is a meaningful one. Avery is offering the chance to provide safety, tenderness, and love at a time when it matters most. In return, she will give a quiet, powerful kind of devotion that stays with you forever.
